Competent Person Certification

Many areas on a jobsite require a competent person be directly observing the area to recognize and correct any hazards that arise.

Typically these areas include Trenching, Scaffolds and Work Zones.

Check out the different requirements below.
The objectives of Competent Person Certification are:

  1. CP will familiarize themselves with the fundamentals of task assigned.
  2. CP will Be responsible for correcting hazards that develop while performing the work.
  3. CP must have the authority to shut down the job if necessary, until the hazard is corrected.
  4. CP’s learn to conduct JSA’s prior to work starting and assess hazards during work.
  5. CP’s must paperwork before and after the work.

Competent Person – Trenching

Competent Person Trenching includes the need for the CP to understand the hazards of working in a trench including the necessity for First aid. The CP must be familiar with the different shoring techniques and requirements including egress and ingress. Part of the training includes learning what inspections and forms must be completed.

Competent Person – Scaffolding

The CP must be familiar with scaffold erection and disassembly. CP’s are required to inspect scaffolds prior to use and during use. The CP must make certain the scaffold is being used within the design of the scaffold. CP’ are required to provide and ambition documentation for inspections.

Competent Person – Work Zones

Many times we are exposed to fall hazards on jobsites. OSHA requires Fall Protection always be provided for employees.

There is always the exception to the rule: Work Zones are areas where workers are exposed to falls because of the type of work being done. Usually to existing buildings where it is impractical to install temporary handrail. These areas usually include ironworkers laying decking of roofers working on an existing roof with no parapet.

The CP is required to be in the Work Zone at all times in control of the work zone. Training includes recognizing potential fall hazards, establishing work area boundaries, understanding the requirements of the materials used to establish boundaries. The CP must be familiar the company’s written Fall Protection Plan addressing the use of Work Zones and enforce the plan including shutting down the job if need be.
